Living in London is really expensive, for sure.
The rent is usually informed per week, for example £150/pw, which works out £600/pm.
It is cheaper to look for a flat in existing shares or outside the city.
Where to look from? Here are some websites that offer reasonable priced flats:
SpareRoom helps people looking for a room find people with a room to rent. You can search for rooms
in existing house shares, Studio flats or whole properties.
Free classified ads from UK - Agents and private landlords.
Similar to Finnish site Tori.fi
Similar marketplace like gumtree.

This is were I found my room from. It is more suitable for a short stay than for long stay, but you never know, someone might be renting their place even for a year or so...
I draw the line to £500/pm and did not want to go over that. I was lucky enough to find a nice place in that price range, in Leyton and will move there in couple of days!!
